and Community Development
The Kasanka Trust Ltd. operates 3 lodges in Kasanka national park
and the Bangweulu wetlands as well as running a conservation and
community development project in and around Kasanka National Park.
Tourism Managers.
Experienced
tourism managers required for managing lodges, hosting and
guiding visitors, domestic supervision, reservations and
marketing. Would suit couples as well as single people. Helpful
qualifications include driving licence, (even pilot’s licence!),
guides licence, experience in hotel/lodge management, wildlife
management, mechanical/construction knowledge, personnel
management experience.
Guides
Both
qualified/experienced and trainee guides are invited to apply.
Duties to include conducting walking, driving and boating
activities for game viewing and birdwatching. Training scheme
available for well motivated trainees. A keen interest in
wildlife, birds and conservation essential.
Waiters/barmen
Experienced/mature waiters and barmen required. Should be
flexible and able to undertake varied duties in and around camp.
Drivers
Experienced
drivers with clean record and good verifiable references.
Helpful qualifications include truck category, tractor
experience, mechanical ability. Need to be very flexible able to
assist with other duties and work varied hours as required.
Community Relations Co-ordinator
Senior position
managing staff, finances and administration in CBNRM and
Conservation Awareness programs. Successful candidate expected
to be Bemba speaking, university educated with minimum 3 years
experience in a similar field.

All applicants
should be prepared to live in a remote rural
situation in Serenje/Mpika districts in simple housing. Most staff
(except managers) are unable to stay with their families inside the
park, and the Trust provides them only single accommodation.
Salaries and conditions are in line with rural standards and
according to qualifications.

PILOT WANTED
Pilot wanted for small
charter company. Must have CPL with 500hrs, be keen on conservation
and tourism work, and happy to live in the bush as part of a
conservation team. Work includes wildlife surveys and wildlife
management flights as well as passenger charters. Current aircraft

Community Relations Co-ordinator
wANTED
Kasanka Trust
The Kasanka Trust is a
non profitable private organisation. Its’ aims are to protect the
wild resources within Kasanka National Park, and to deliver real
benefits to the community outside the park.
The Trust
follows a two-way approach to combat poaching and fires, the main
problems threatening the park. The Park Protection Unit (PPU)
patrols inside the park to arrest poachers and fire starters. The
Community Programme in the surrounding Game Management Area serves
to enhance conservation awareness amongst the community, to develop
new sources of income and food as an alternative to poaching, and to
support local initiatives in Community Based Natural Resources
Management (CBNRM). The Kasanka Community Project has been
implemented since 1997 under the supervision of the Community
Relations Co-ordinator (CRC). Funds are presently available for a
one year period to support the project with an option for continued
funding up to three years.
The current secondment
of a development worker functioning as a community relations
co-ordinator by German Development Service (DED) will end in
September 2004. A local experienced CBNRM specialist has been
proposed to take over under continued DED support.
TASKS OF THE
COMMUNITY RELATIONS CO-ORDINATOR:
1.
To develop a program for community based natural resource management
in Kafinda GMA together with other community staff and stakeholders
2.
To develop / improve participatory systems for natural resources
monitoring and land-use planning
3. To
develop / improve participatory systems for program monitoring and
evaluation
4. To
supervise and guide 2 community relations assistants, 1 office
assistant and 1 messenger
5. Manage
and administrate project finances
6. Report
to and maintain contact with current and potential donors
7. Report
to and maintain contact with relevant government departments, local
council and local leaders
The
Community Relations Co-ordinator (CRC) reports to the Park Manager.
THE CANDIDATE IT IS EXPECTED HAVE
THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree forestry, biology, wildlife management or equivalent

At least three years experience in project
cycle management

Working knowledge of conservation and
CBNRM

Experience in participatory planning and
evaluation techniques

Experience with book keeping

Good working knowledge of Bemba

Good interpersonal skills

Able to work independently

Willingness to travel and camp overnight
on a regular basis

Willingness to live in simple rural

BENEFITS:
A gross
salary will be paid depending on the level of experience of the
candidate. A system of allowances is not being used by the Kasanka
Trust, but properly incurred expenses will be catered for. There
will be a probation period of 6 months. For those with proven
capabilities there will be good prospects for promotion.
